The research is very clear and any teacher will tell you: Involved parents equipped and motivated to guide the progress of their children’s education, are the prime catalysts for a child’s success in school and life. The parent is the child’s first and most important teacher.

The Goals of The Parent Academy are:
  • To assist parents in becoming active partners in their children’s education;
  • To strengthen families;
  • To provide community support for families and public education; and
  • To increase the ranks of advocates for strong public schools.

Solutions to specific issues or problems, besides the goals set, were designed to include the following:

  • To provide a rich set of offerings for parents countywide, in varying settings, on a sustained basis that are FREE OF CHARGE;
  • To provide parents who are not familiar with the education system in the United States with an understanding of the school system in their own native language, and to equip them to be better advocates for their children; and
  • To provide parents with "open doors" to further their own growth and employment through partnerships with colleges, universities and technical schools.
The Parent Academy provides free workshops for parents at school sites, businesses, libraries, parks, and community centers throughout Miami-Dade County. Workshops are delivered in English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole, depending on the language needs of the parents attending. During our first year, our goal was to have 10,000 parents participate in our workshops. Over 18,000 participated in the first year!

The Parent Academy also hosts family learning events, which are events held at museums and local attractions such as the Miami Children’s Museum, Parrot Jungle Island, the Historical Museum of South Florida, and the Miami Museum of Science and Planetarium. Families receive free admission, offering families who may not be able to afford the venues an opportunity to experience them together. The events include enjoying the museum or attraction exhibits, and participating in educational activities provided by The Parent Academy.
