| The mission of Adopt a Hurricane Family is to assist those displaced by Hurricanes Katrina, Wilma, future hurricanes and other disasters. AHF will assist or coordinate in placing victims of disasters into secure housing. Other activities can include providing job placement assistance, food, furniture and other living necessities to those displaced. "Our ultimate goal is for these families to become Self-Sufficient." The above activities will promote relief to the poor, the distressed and the underprivileged affected by catastrophes. One of our current goals is to empty out the CB Smith and Easterlin FEMA Parks in Broward County. This is being accomplished through a collaborative community effort involving over 30 agencies / organizations and businesses. AHF is providing first and/or last month's rent, primary furniture and personal needs, and a coordination of other services in cooperation with our community partners. | Update | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Dear Friends, Here is our latest update on the CB Smith and Easterlin FEMA Parks in Broward County. In March 2006, there were officially 93 Hurricane Wilma displaced families or individuals residing in FEMA travel trailers, located in CB Smith and Easterlin Broward County Parks. In early March, Adopt a Hurricane Family (AHF) set a goal of getting all of the these families into secure housing before the next hurricane hits South Florida. As of 9/12/06 there are approximately 30 families or individuals remaining in the 2 parks. The numbers are as follows: CB Smith: 13 Total families (5 families with children and 8 individuals or couples) Easterlin: 17 Total families (6 families with children and 11 individuals or couples) Every Wednesday, representatives of AHF, Broward County Human Services, FEMA and Project Hope meet to evaluate the status of each resident. Our team makes progress every day! This continued success can only be attributed to a united community effort. Each week, through the assistance of so many, our displaced neighbors are finding places to call home. AHF's "Communities Adopting Families" Program and "Hurricane Relief and Restoration" Fairs could not have been a success without South Florida's amazing collaborative community effort! Special thanks to Neighbors 4 Neighbors / CBS 4 / My 33 for their continued support of our program. Our sincere appreciation goes out to Hispanic Unity, who recently joined in our efforts to assist these families. Kudos' to the Madera School Alumni of South Florida... whose Annual Alumni Public Service Event (Saturday, September 16th) will benefit AHF's displaced families. We thank these and each of the below agencies / organizations that have partnered in our united cause:
The Long Term Recovery Coalition (LTRC) through The United Way of Broward County must be applauded for their incredible efforts to help the victims of Hurricane Wilma and better prepare our community for future disasters. We wish to thank all those who have funded Adopt a Hurricane Family's efforts to help families displaced from hurricanes. There are too many to list them all, however; we would like to acknowledge (in alphabetical order) some of our larger contributors: Majic Children's Fund / Majic 102.7 Men of St. Mark Neighbors 4 Neighbors / CBS 4 / My 33 Publix Supermarkets The Salvation Army United Way of Broward County Uritis Family Now that we have reached the 1 year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and Adopt a Hurricane Family, we still find thousands in South Florida who have been severely affected by the storms of last year. We look forward to being able to expand our "Communities Adopting Families" Program, in order to greater assist our neighbors in need. Together we can make it happen!! Look for our next update -or- visit our website at www.adoptahurricanefamily.org/wishlist. Thank you for all that you do to make this a better community!
